Soil Pulverizer

Larger Image
The soil pulverizer is used for breaking up aggregations of air dried samples with minimal breakdown of aggregate particles and to greatly reduce the dust particles in the air when using the mortar and pestle method. The soil pulverizer is the Bureau of Public Roads type in which the aggregations are broken up by the action of loose rubber covered steel bars in rotating drums. Sample containers are 6 gallon drums approximately 11 1/4inch O.D. and 15 1/2inch long with a lid and gasket along with a quick-acting steel closure. The rotating device has a welded steel frame with rubber covered shafts and a motor drive. Samples of 15 to 30 Ib. are placed in the container with two bars, sealed with the quick-acting lids, laid on the shafts and rotated 5 to 30 minutes depending on the type of soil. For some very hard clays, it may be necessary to screen with a No.10 sieve and repeat the process with the amount retained using three roller bars.
